How to jump start your car

Requirements: jumper cables and a live car. The order below matters.

  1. Live car: turn off the engine and remove the key. Make sure the emergency brake is on and the transmission in neutral. Also make sure that your cables are always apart and away from your body.
  2. Dead car: connect one end of the positive cable (red) to the battery’s positive terminal. Terminals are distinguished by their colors (red for positive and black for negative) and/or their sign (+ for positive, - for negative).
  3. Live car: connect the other end of the positive cable to the battery’s positive terminal
  4. Live car: connect the end of the negative cable (black) to the battery’s negative terminal.
  5. Dead car: connect the end of the negative the cable to a ground, for example a bolt on your hood.
  6. Keep the cables away from hot components, such as the radiator or the engine.
  7. Start the live car and slightly rev up the engine every now and then. Do this for a few minutes.
  8. Dead (now alive) car: disconnect the ground.
  9. Live car: disconnect the negative terminal.
  10. Live car: disconnect the positive terminal.
  11. Dead car: disconnect the positive terminal.

DO NOT confuse the terminals, or you might destroy your car’s computer system.
